NC Historical Records Online (NCHRO) is very pleased to announce that we have completed our multi-year project to put 1.2 million images of original documents associated with all 200,000 North Carolina land grants on our free website http://nclandgrants.com . The final counties added were Columbus, Davidson, Hyde, Nash, Montgomery, Richmond, Sampson, and Davidson TN.
The images on the website came from records held by the State Archives of North Carolina (SANC) contained on over 900 reels of microfilm and digitized by the State Archives Micrographics Unit. Many of these images are not available anywhere else online or even outside of SANC. NCHRO linked these images to a detailed database of land grants generously provided by SANC, giving website users a wide variety of search options to help locate grants.
Funding for this project came from over $12,000 in mostly small donations from 152 individuals, and we would like to thank everyone who contributed regardless of the amount – every bit helped! We would like to specifically thank Worth Anderson, Betty Bengtson, Cheryl Chasin, Patrick Connelly, Anita Finger Smith, Terri Flack, Sharon Gable, Betty Gerlack, Beverly Huffman-Harms, Morgan Jackson, Susan Manolakos, Elizabeth Moye, and Charles Nesbit for their contributions. We especially thank Judy Russell for both her contributions and for publicizing this project.
With this project now complete, NCHRO is focusing on digitization of other North Carolina records that are not available online on a new website http://ncscans.com . This not only includes those held by large repositories such as SANC, but also smaller repositories that might not have the resources or expertise to put their old records online. NCHRO is also collecting images of privately held records, some of which have never been seen outside of the family holding them. Stay tuned for more information soon!
